BRIANA MOREIRA (She/her)
Intro to film was the second and last class I took in photography but the most important. It was where I discovered that I love shooting on film and in a documentary style. A form that has helped me in the art of storytelling. I am a New York-born and raised photographer focusing on commercial, editorial, and documentary photography. Although I shoot in many genres, I ensure that I include photographs of people showing their most natural selves. When I do have to pose my subjects, I start by asking “what would you do if I wasn’t here? How would you stand waiting for this bus?" Growing up in two different boroughs in New York City, I naturally observed the movements of people, specifically black people. It's paramount for me to showcase us in various forms. My photography work is a combination of Black people's authentic relationships with people, places, and things and what I would like to see.

Featured Works:
These photos are taken from part of a bigger art piece by the name of "Pou Reverans Matriyach La" which translates to "For the reverence of the matriarch" from Haitian Kreyol to English. This project explores the matriarchal figure in Haitian communities whether that is grandmothers, mothers, cousins, aunties, nieces, or daughters.
As someone who was raised by their grandmother, mother, and older cousin, and turn, helped raise their own younger siblings as well, women have been the main pillar in my family that kept the unit together.
Due to the machismo and sexist nature of Caribbean culture, like most cultures around the world, women are not given their flowers for all the hard work they do in these communities.
This project is centered around my grandmother Elisabeth Violette, for whom I was named Jennifer Violette. I spent time documenting my mother, grandmother, and cousins, as we all came from my grandmother and she is the pillar that keeps us together.
